Shawnee County urges West Nile virus precautions during National Mosquito Control Week
Health officials recommend preventative measures to combat summer mosquito-borne illness
TOPEKA, Kan. — Shawnee County health officials are urging residents to protect themselves against West Nile virus and other insect-borne diseases as National Mosquito Control Week runs through June 27.
The Shawnee County Health Department recommends preventative measures including eliminating standing water to halt mosquito breeding, avoiding the outdoors at dawn and dusk, and applying EPA-registered insect repellents. Residents are also advised to wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved clothing and install or repair protective screens on home windows, as well as use netting over playpens and strollers.
