Lawrence planners to weigh 650-acre annexation, Jayhawk Club apartments
Commissioners to review major westward expansion and multiunit housing proposals Wednesday
LAWRENCE, Kan. — A proposal to annex and rezone approximately 650 acres of agricultural land for residential development highlights a Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Commission meeting scheduled for Wednesday.
The annexation request, submitted by Landplan Engineering on behalf of Fairway LC and other property owners, targets the southwest corner of Kansas Highway 10 and West Sixth Street. The move represents a potential major expansion of the city's boundaries, aligning with a proposed comprehensive amendment to Plan 2040 called "The West of K-10 Plan." The plan, which would guide future land use for territory west of K-10, is under review as part of the city's broader long-range planning process. The Lawrence City Commission initially directed the annexation review March 3.
Alongside the westward expansion proposal, planners will review a preliminary development plan for a multiunit residential complex known as the Jayhawk Club Apartments. Submitted by CFS Engineers on behalf of property owner Eagle 1968 LC, the project would be located on Lot 5 at 1840 Crossgate Drive.
The commission, which convenes at 6:30 p.m. in the City Commission Room, will also consider text amendments aimed at streamlining the city's land development code to correct existing regulatory errors and improve overall clarity.
