County adopts roadway safety resolution
TOPEKA, Kan. — Shawnee County Public Works Director Courtney House recently presented a Vision Zero-style safety resolution that was adopted by the Shawnee County Board of County Commissioners. The board, which consists of Commissioners Kevin Cook, Aaron Mays and Bill Riphahn, approved the measure, which is tied to federal safety grants. House noted the county's safety action plan prioritizes roadway improvements based on 11 years of crash data.
Resident alleges misconduct in public comment
TOPEKA, Kan. — During recent public comment periods before the Topeka City Council and the Shawnee County Board of County Commissioners, Dr. Justin Spies announced pending civil rights lawsuits against local agencies. Spies alleged he experienced an unlawful arrest and punitive detention conditions, claiming officers and corrections staff violated his constitutional rights. Local officials have not publicly commented on the allegations, which Spies stated are currently in litigation.
County utilizes consultant for benefits contract
TOPEKA, Kan. — The Shawnee County Board of County Commissioners previously approved an Optum Rx benefits contract that was reviewed by consulting firm Willis Towers Watson. The firm, working in tandem with the Shawnee County Counselor's Office, reviewed amendments to the administrative services agreement and pricing terms for the county's employee prescription benefits. The specific benefit prices remained unchanged during the contract renewal process.
