MCPHERSON, Kan. — In January 2010, the McPherson Opera House opened its restored theater to the public for the first time in more than four decades. That same month, McPherson native Jordan Bandy, barely out of high school, joined the staff as technical director. Sixteen years later, the story of the building's second life and the story of Bandy's career have become nearly impossible to tell apart.

The Opera House was built in 1888 and opened in January 1889 as a vaudeville house. Touring troupes arrived in McPherson by train, performed on its stage and moved on to the next stop along the line.
