City preparing new regulations for electric scooters and e-bikes
HURON, S.D. — The Huron City Commission announced upcoming regulations for electric scooters, electric motorcycles and e-bikes. Public Safety Commissioner Shawn Harvey said the Huron Police Department, South Dakota Highway Patrol and Beadle County Sheriff's Office are currently gathering regulatory information from other communities to draft the new rules. The proposed regulations are slated for further discussion at next month's Huron Public Safety Committee meeting, addressing citizen concerns regarding motorized bicycles and pedestrian safety on city sidewalks.
New stop sign approved for 24th Street and Kansas Avenue
HURON, S.D. — A new stop sign will soon be installed at the intersection of 24th Street Southeast and Kansas Avenue Southeast to slow down neighborhood traffic. The new signage will require north and south traffic on Kansas Avenue to stop, while east and west traffic on 24th Street will continue to pass through uninterrupted. City officials cited the angle of the roads and the presence of parked vehicles as the primary reasons for implementing the new safety measure.
City removes two-hour parking limit on Illinois Avenue Southwest
HURON, S.D. — The city is removing the two-hour parking restriction on Illinois Avenue Southwest between Third and Fourth streets. Commissioner Shawn Harvey noted that the area is frequently used for extended parking by nearby businesses and their customers, and the city determined that enforcing the timed signage was no longer an effective or necessary use of resources.
