No. 1 Hutchinson shuts out No. 10 Coffeyville 31-0, takes sole possession of first place

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Top-ranked Hutchinson Community College extended its winning streak to 11 games with a 31-0 victory over No. 10 Coffeyville on Oct. 25 at Gowans Stadium, claiming sole possession of first place in the Jayhawk Conference.
The Blue Dragons (7-0, 3-0 KJCCC) started 7-0 for the fourth consecutive season and recorded their third win over a top-10 opponent this season. Coffeyville dropped to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
Hutchinson's defense dominated in rainy conditions, holding the Red Ravens to 159 total yards — 196 yards below their season average. The Blue Dragons recorded five sacks, 11 tackles for loss and three takeaways while forcing eight punts.
"It was our second shutout of the season," said defensive standout D.J. Jester, who led the team with five tackles and had an interception.
Jason Wilson's 15-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter capped the scoring and marked Hutchinson's fifth defensive touchdown this season. Kevin Moorer also recovered a fumble for the Blue Dragons.
Quarterback Christian Johnson completed 12 of 24 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns while rushing 19 times for 49 yards and another score. Hutchinson totaled 339 yards of offense.
The Blue Dragons didn't score until their fourth possession, when Johnson connected with Kordell Gouldsby on a 30-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Gouldsby made a one-armed grab in the end zone.
Hutchinson erupted for 17 points in a 4-minute, 32-second span late in the second quarter. L.T. Robinson caught a 76-yard touchdown pass, Alejandro de la Poza kicked a 35-yard field goal, and Johnson scored on a 4-yard run to give the Blue Dragons a 24-0 halftime lead.
Robinson finished with three catches for 99 yards, while Gouldsby had four receptions for 51 yards. Lekedrin Harvey led all rushers with 50 yards on nine carries.
Hutchinson's 11-game winning streak is the fourth-longest in program history. The Blue Dragons have now won 18 of their last 21 games against Coffeyville and improved to 36-56-4 all-time in the series.
The shutout was just the third by Hutchinson over Coffeyville in 95 meetings and the first since 2010.
Hutchinson will travel to face No. 13 Butler next Saturday, Nov. 1, in El Dorado.
