Arkansas City Fire/EMS Seeks Community Input on New Station Location

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — Arkansas City Fire/EMS is asking residents to weigh in on plans for a new fire and emergency medical services facility, including where it should be built, as the department outgrows its current station.

The existing building, originally constructed as a military armory, has served the community since the 1980s. Officials say it no longer meets modern standards for safety, space or operations.

"As our community grows and demands on our services evolve, it's time to plan for the next 30 to 40 years," the department said.

Two potential sites are under consideration: the block of East Poplar Street and J Street, near the U.S. 77 Bypass and positioned in the center of the Poplar Walking Trail, and the 700 block of East Kansas Avenue, near Arkansas City Middle School and the Arkansas City Greenhouse.

To help guide the decision, the department has launched a community survey asking residents to review both sites and share their preference. The survey is available at form.typeform.com/to/KlJI0s4tX.

An open house and information session is scheduled for Monday, March 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the current station, 115 S. D St. Residents are invited to tour the building, view proposed facility renderings, learn about funding and location options and speak directly with Fire/EMS staff, contractors and city staff. Hot dogs and chips will be served.
