Hutchinson Implements Chip Seal Program, Promotes Housing Options

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson is using a cost-effective road maintenance method called chip seal to extend the life of residential streets while exploring new housing opportunities for residents.

The chip seal process involves applying oil to fill small cracks in asphalt roads, then covering the surface with rock to create a new layer. City officials say this method adds years to a road's lifespan without the time and expense of full reconstruction.

Hutchinson follows an eight-year cycle to chip seal all residential asphalt roads. This year, crews focused on neighborhoods north of 30th Avenue between Monroe and Lorraine. In 2026, work will move south of Avenue A between Monroe and Plum.

The city is also promoting accessory dwelling units, commonly known as backyard homes, as a housing option for residents with extra lot space. These secondary structures are permitted in many Hutchinson neighborhoods and serve families housing aging parents or adult children, as well as those seeking rental income.

Residents interested in adding an accessory dwelling unit can contact the Planning Division at 620-694-2639 for more information about regulations and permitting requirements.
