Blue Dragons sweep Southwestern in volleyball classic 25-6, 25-6, 25-5

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team delivered an absolutely spectacular performance Saturday, rewriting the record books with a jaw-dropping 25-6, 25-6, 25-5 demolition of Southwestern College JV at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons' dominant sweep closed out the 2025 Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic in style, securing their first home victory of the season and establishing multiple program milestones that will be talked about for years to come.

Most remarkably, Hutchinson allowed just 17 total points — the fewest in the rally-score era dating back to 2001. The previous record of 29 points, set against Cloud County in 2008, wasn't even close.

"This was an incredible team performance," said freshman sensation Clara Oliveira, who absolutely torched the opposition with 12 service aces, tying Hall of Famer Mariana Blue's mark for second-most in single-match history.

The Blue Dragons were virtually unstoppable from the service line, racking up 21 aces as a team — the second-most in program history. Their offensive attack was equally devastating, posting a blistering .569 hitting percentage, also the second-highest single-match mark in school annals.

Middle blockers Kierny Follmer and Mattie Galliher spearheaded the assault with a combined 22 kills. Follmer carved up the defense with career-highs of 11 kills on 18 attacks for a phenomenal .611 hitting percentage, while Galliher matched her with 11 kills at a .500 clip.

The statistical domination was complete — Hutchinson hammered 42 kills on 65 attacks with just five errors, while Southwestern managed only three kills on 51 attempts for a staggering negative-.137 hitting percentage.

Setter Angela Reupena orchestrated the offensive explosion with 32 assists, while Oliveira added 10 digs to complement her record-tying ace performance.

The Blue Dragons seized control immediately in the opening set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead and never looking back. A Lauren Vazquez kill extended the advantage to 10-1, and Hutchinson closed with a crushing 9-0 run punctuated by four Oliveira aces, including the set winner.

Set two brought more of the same dominance, as the Blue Dragons posted a season-high .650 attack percentage with 14 kills on 20 swings. Consecutive Vazquez aces opened a 10-1 lead, and back-to-back Reupena aces pushed the margin to 20-3 before Oliveira's seventh ace of the frame sealed the 25-6 victory.

The third set featured perhaps the most dominant stretch of the match, as Hutchinson closed on an 11-0 run powered by Oliveira's incredible serving. She rattled off four straight aces to build an 18-5 lead, then added three more in the final flourish before Jaylynn McNeill's kill ended the historic performance.

The victory improved Hutchinson to 10-11 overall after finishing 1-3 in the Classic. The Blue Dragons will look to carry this momentum into Monday's KJCCC showdown at Dodge City.

With records falling left and right, this performance will undoubtedly go down as one of the most memorable in Blue Dragons volleyball history — a complete team effort that showcased the program's incredible potential when everything clicks.
