Winfield Police Department to Host Free Youth Citizens Police Academy June 1-5

WINFIELD, Kan. — The Winfield Police Department will host its annual Youth Citizens Police Academy June 1-5, offering two age-specific sessions for children and teens at no cost to participants.

The program is divided into two parts. A session for children ages 9-12 will be held June 1 from 9 a.m. to noon. Teen sessions for ages 13-18 will run June 2-4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a cookout wrapping up the program June 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The youth program is designed to build a positive foundation between participants and law enforcement through age-appropriate activities.

The teen portion of the academy will provide hands-on exposure to law enforcement responsibilities over three days. Topics covered include police operations, traffic enforcement, technology in law enforcement, S.W.A.T., drug investigations, DUI, TASER and more. Teens will also provide feedback to help enhance officers' relations with young people in the community.

Applications are due by noon Monday, May 18. Class size is limited in each age range, so early applications are encouraged. The program is offered free of charge thanks to financial support from Alia Tate Agency — Shelter Insurance and Cowley College Criminal Justice.
