Wenderott breaks 43-year discus record at McPherson Invitational
McPherson's boys won the team title while the girls finished second Thursday.
MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson varsity boys track and field team claimed first place overall at the McPherson Varsity Invitational on Thursday, highlighted by senior Caden Wenderott's discus throw of 172 feet, 10 inches — a new school record that also moved him to No. 1 in Class 4A, breaking a 43-year-old mark.
Wenderott also won the shot put, while Ashton Malm took the 100 meters, Kayden Friesen won the 800, and Caleb Muehler claimed the 3,200; the 4x800 relay team of Friesen, Tripp Pelzel, Daniel Bowen and Muehler and the 4x100 squad of Jayren Stutzman, Brody Hoffman, Kinnick Anderson and Malm both finished first.
The McPherson varsity girls, who finished second as a team, got wins from the 4x400 relay of Ella Wyssmann, Kamryn Prescott, Andi Buschbom and Piper Solofra, along with individual titles from Karsen Burris in the javelin and Andi Buschbom in the long jump; as a program, McPherson athletes combined for 48 personal records on the night, which also served as a celebration for the team's 16 graduating seniors.
