Veteran firefighter Jeremy Unruh takes command as Hutchinson Fire Chief

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jeremy Unruh, a 27-year veteran of the Hutchinson Fire Department, has been named fire chief, the city announced.

Unruh, a second-generation firefighter, succeeds to the department's top post after nearly three decades of service that has included advancing HFD's operations, training and service delivery. He will lead a department that has earned ISO Class 1 status and international accreditation, among the highest distinctions in the fire service profession.

"I am extremely proud to have been selected to lead such an outstanding team of men and women who are dedicated to the protection and safety of this community," Unruh said in a letter to residents.

Unruh said the department's path forward will be guided by goals developed collaboratively with the community and HFD members, with a focus on ensuring firefighters have the tools, equipment and training to meet residents' needs.

The new chief also pledged to keep an open line with the public. "Communication and transparency are essential," he said. "You will see me and our members out at public events and community engagements."

Unruh said his roots in the community and the department will shape his approach to the job. "As a second-generation firefighter with 27 years of service at HFD, I am deeply committed to this community and to providing a premier level of service to Hutchinson and Fire District No. 2," he said.

The City of Hutchinson looks forward to Unruh's leadership as the department continues to serve residents.
