McPherson Commission to Vote on $1M Hickory Street Reconstruction Contract

MCPHERSON, Kan. – The McPherson County Board of Commissioners on Monday will consider requests for new spending from the county's health and clerk's offices, according to the meeting agenda. The board is scheduled to hear a proposal from McPherson County Health Department Director Shalei Shea to purchase two new cell phone plans for approximately $77 per month, which are needed for 24/7 emergency contact and to provide continuity of care during phone system outages. Shea will also ask the board to write off $119.20 in uncollectible debt from the second quarter. County Clerk Hollie Melroy is also slated to request the purchase of office furniture at a cost of $2,470.64. Additionally, the agenda includes department updates from the Planning/Zoning/Environment Director and a discussion of non-elected personnel with the County Treasurer.

The McPherson City Commission is set to approve a contract for more than $1 million for the reconstruction of Hickory Street at its meeting on Tuesday. According to the meeting agenda, the contract with Prairie Landworks for the Hickory Street Reconstruction project is not to exceed $1,001,465.92. The project was sent out for bids in early June, with a potential construction start later this summer or in the early fall. In other business, the commission will consider approving the second-half installment of the 2026 workers' compensation insurance premium of $105,114.00, requests for a 4th of July block party and a community safety day, and the introduction of a new police officer candidate and a police intern. The agenda also includes a public meeting announcement for July 14 to discuss the revenue neutral rate.
The McPherson City Commission will hold a study session on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, to discuss a variety of topics including a contract for nuisance wildlife damage control, the purchase of new hydraulic rescue tools for the Fire Department, and a proposal for the engineering and design of the cemetery "E Blocks". Also on the agenda is the consideration of a plat for a new Casey's Convenience Store and the proposed annexation of land south of Love's Travel Stop. The commission will also review a new job description for a Street Assistant Superintendent.
