TOPEKA, Kan. — A local woman who has donated hundreds of handmade quilts to students and families in need has been named the 2026 Millie Murphy Award recipient by Topeka Public Schools.

Lorene Brunzel retired in 1997 and more recently discovered a passion for quilting, spending the past six years contributing her creations to the TPS Community Cupboard, a district program that provides food, clothing and essential household items to local families.

The award honors Brunzel's generosity, compassion and commitment to serving the Topeka community. Brunzel, a mother of two who recently celebrated 70 years of marriage with her husband, continues to use her talents to benefit students and families who rely on the district's assistance.
