US Eases Iran Oil Sanctions as Talks Open to End War
Vice President JD Vance said June 22 that a first round of US-Iran negotiations in Switzerland set a good foundation for a deal to formally end the war, and that Iran had agreed to admit International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors at the minimum this week, though Iranian state media disputed that Tehran made any new commitment on inspections. The talks follow a memorandum of understanding signed June 17 by President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that calls for ending hostilities within 60 days, with a further round scheduled June 23-25 in Washington. The same day, the Treasury Department issued a 60-day license authorizing the production, delivery and sale of Iranian crude oil, petroleum and petrochemical products, fulfilling a provision of the memorandum. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the waiver, which runs through about August 21 and also covers shipping-related services such as vessel management, insurance and crewing. Crude futures fell more than 1.5% after the announcement, with Brent down 1.7% to $76.61 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate down 1.6% to $72.69. Critics in the US and Israel said the license rewards Iran despite its earlier threats to close the Strait of Hormuz.

Appeals Court Clears Ohio to Enforce Social Media Consent Law for Minors
A three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ruled 2-1 on June 18 that Ohio may enforce its Social Media Parental Notification Act, reversing a lower-court order that had blocked the 2023 law since early 2024. The law requires social media platforms to obtain verifiable parental consent before allowing children under 16 to create accounts. Judges Eric Clay and Alice Batchelder concluded the measure did not on its face violate the First Amendment, while Judge Kevin Ritz dissented, warning that the state lacks "a free-floating power to restrict the ideas to which children may be exposed." The case was brought by NetChoice, an industry group representing Meta, TikTok, Snap, Google and X, which argued the law restricts protected speech and is unconstitutionally vague. Similar age-verification and parental-consent laws have been enacted in several states, and courts have split on whether they survive constitutional review.

China Blocks Exports to 10 US Defense Firms in Retaliation
China's Commerce Ministry announced June 22 that it would bar Chinese companies from exporting dual-use goods to 10 American military-related firms, including drone makers Red Cat Holdings and Teal Drones, Oshkosh Defense, Ball Aerospace, L3Harris Maritime Services and rare-earth firms MP Materials and USA Rare Earth. Beijing said the move responds to what it called Washington's wrongful expansion of its List of Chinese Military Companies, after the US Defense Department added firms including Alibaba and Baidu to that list earlier in June. The ministry framed the export ban as protecting China's national security. The measure restricts the targeted companies' access to Chinese-supplied components and materials. The action lands hardest on the rare-earth sector, where China dominates global mining and processing and where US firms such as MP Materials and USA Rare Earth are working to build domestic supply chains. Such minerals are essential inputs for magnets, electronics and advanced weapons systems, making them a recurring pressure point in US-China relations. The exchange marks the latest escalation in a broadening contest over military supply chains and dual-use technology between the two countries.

SpaceX Debuts Starfall Capsule to Bring Cargo Back From Orbit
SpaceX was set to launch its first Starfall capsule early June 23 atop a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, a debut demonstration of a vehicle designed to carry payloads to orbit and return them safely to Earth. The flat, disk-shaped craft is about 10.2 feet (3.1 meters) wide and weighs roughly 4,630 pounds (2,100 kilograms), with the capacity to bring back up to about 2,200 pounds (1,000 kilograms) of cargo. Unlike a crew capsule, it is built to retrieve research and manufactured goods such as pharmaceuticals and materials made in microgravity rather than carry people, with splashdowns targeted off the US West Coast. The mission follows SpaceX's application to the Federal Aviation Administration for reentry-vehicle landings and reflects growing commercial interest in manufacturing products in space. Reliable, frequent return of cargo from orbit is a key missing piece for a potential in-space manufacturing economy, an arena where US companies are racing to lead.

Messi Breaks All-Time World Cup Scoring Record on US Soil
Argentina captain Lionel Messi became the all-time leading scorer in men's World Cup history June 22, netting twice in a 2-0 group-stage win over Austria in Dallas to reach 18 career World Cup goals. The performance broke the record of 16 set by Germany's Miroslav Klose, which had stood since 2014; Messi had tied it days earlier with a hat trick against Algeria. France's Kylian Mbappé, who also scored to reach 16, now shares second place with Klose. The milestone came at the 2026 World Cup, the first co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico and the first to feature 48 teams, with many matches played in American stadiums. The tournament has drawn enormous US audiences and is widely viewed as a landmark moment for the sport's growth in the country.

JUNE 23 1868: QWERTY TYPEWRITER PATENTED, REVOLUTIONIZING WRITTEN COMMUNICATION
Christopher Latham Sholes patents his QWERTY typewriter, transforming how people produce and share written text by making typing faster and more practical than handwriting. His early prototype was ingeniously assembled from an old table, a circular piece of glass, a telegraph key, and piano wire, marking a pivotal step toward modern keyboards.
