The Cedars Wins State Tax Credits for Senior Care Expansion
$173,355 in credits will help fund 28 new rooms for senior care
MCPHERSON, Kan. — The Cedars will add 28 health care rooms across two of its homes after winning $173,355 in state tax credits, the Kansas Department of Commerce announced in early July. The expansion will allow the McPherson retirement community to serve up to 66 seniors who need supportive health care services.
The Community Service Program does not provide cash grants. Instead, the state authorizes selected nonprofits to offer tax credits to the people and businesses that donate to an approved project. Because McPherson has fewer than 15,000 residents, donors to The Cedars can claim 70% of their gift as a credit against their Kansas taxes. Donors to projects in larger communities receive a 50% credit.
The Cedars was one of 24 nonprofits sharing $4.13 million in credits statewide this year, supporting projects that range from child care centers to downtown revitalization. Nearby, the McPherson County Community Foundation received $182,000 in credits for a new kitchen at Cradles to Crayons in Moundridge, and Schowalter Villa in Hesston received $182,000 to replace pool systems at the Hesston Wellness Center.
The state has issued Community Service Program credits since 1994, with recipients chosen through a competitive application process each year. Lt. Gov. and Commerce Secretary David Toland said the program lets the state partner with nonprofits and their donors to "fund projects that make a real, lasting difference for Kansas families."
