High school redesign prioritizes student safety and flood mitigation

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Incite Design Studio architects presented updated designs for McPherson High School, emphasizing a consolidated, single-roof layout to enhance campus security and prevent students from walking outside between classes. The plans include a new International Code Council 500 storm shelter gymnasium, the conversion of the existing auxiliary gym into a wrestling room and new outdoor athletic locker rooms. Site grading will also be permanently restructured to eliminate long-standing drainage and flooding issues around the campus.

District commits to repurposing high school agricultural building

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Addressing community concerns, McPherson USD 418 officials reaffirmed their commitment to preserving the high school's agricultural building, which must be relocated to accommodate the new campus footprint. While the structure stands in the way of the new secure exterior classroom and student commons, the district is working with Simpson Construction Services to find a sensible new use for the building to protect the taxpayers' investment.

Middle school site plan features traffic improvements, repurposed classrooms

MCPHERSON, Kan. — The board reviewed design progress for McPherson Middle School, which will feature a large west-side addition and a cohesive exterior to seamlessly blend with the existing building. The site plan introduces a new parent drop-off pathway designed to stack cars and reduce street congestion. Inside, former Eisenhower Elementary School spaces will be repurposed following the district's decision to consolidate elementary schools and transition the Eisenhower building into the new middle school campus, converting kindergarten rooms into science labs and transforming the undersized gymnasium into vocal and band rooms.

Construction timeline set for fall start at middle school

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Representatives from Simpson Construction Services announced that initial building efforts are tentatively slated to begin in the middle to late fall. Early construction phases will likely focus on McPherson Middle School and the high school's Career and Technical Education building. Major construction on the main high school facility is not expected to commence until the spring of 2027 as architects finalize structural materials and project phasing.

Staff feedback shaping new school facility designs

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Incite Design Studio architects are actively soliciting feedback from McPherson teachers to ensure the new building designs meet modern educational needs. Following initial summer surveys and virtual meetings, the design team will hold a comprehensive presentation and a 90-minute question-and-answer session with the entire staff before the school year begins. The board emphasized the importance of balancing patron expectations with functional, day-to-day classroom necessities.

Board approves additional funds for elementary remodel compliance

MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson Board of Education unanimously approved a $10,000 budget increase for ongoing remodeling projects at Lincoln Elementary School and Washington Elementary School. The funds, which supplement a previously approved $170,800 budget, will cover unforeseen safety and compliance modifications, including the installation of new fire strobe lights. District officials noted that the equipment is a permanent safety upgrade that can be repurposed even if room layouts change in the future.

District adopts "Bound" app to comply with state communication laws

MCPHERSON, Kan. — To comply with Kansas House Bill 2299 regarding educator-student communication, the McPherson Board of Education unanimously approved the use of the "Bound" app for all seventh- through 12th-grade activities and athletics, while also designating Facebook and Instagram as the official district social media communication platforms. The Bound platform is designed to restrict unmonitored private messaging between coaches and students, providing a secure, monitored environment that will also handle physicals and concussion protocol consents. The app comes at no additional cost to the district, as it is covered by existing Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League dues. The formal social media designation helps keep the district compliant with HB 2299, which restricts how schools and educators interact with students and patrons online, though email remains the primary communication tool for classroom teachers.

District dips into cash reserves as fiscal year closes

MCPHERSON, Kan. — During a routine budget review, McPherson USD 418 officials revealed the district dipped into its cash reserves by slightly over $1 million to close out the fiscal year. The draw on reserves would have been larger if not for roughly $1.4 million in savings realized from recent building closures, staff salary adjustments and lease payoffs. However, the savings fell short of the board's $1.75 million target, primarily due to higher-than-anticipated health insurance rates, leading to the $1 million deficit.
