Groveland bridge construction nears major deck pour

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — Construction on the bridge located two miles west of Groveland at 10th Avenue and Comanche Road is progressing smoothly, with a major concrete deck pour scheduled in approximately one week. McPherson County Public Works project engineer Elizabeth Hopp noted that the construction staging area was relocated to the east side to alleviate neighborhood access complaints on 10th Avenue, though the intersection will eventually need to be temporarily closed and torn out for regrading later in the project.

Bids to open for $940,000 Arapaho bridge replacement

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — The county will open bids on July 28 for the replacement of a bridge on Arapaho Road between Seventh and Eighth avenues. The 60-day project is largely funded by a grant through the Kansas Department of Transportation's Local Bridge Improvement Program, which covers 85 percent of the $940,000 total estimated project cost, while McPherson County provides the remaining 15 percent match of approximately $141,000.

Construction to begin on flood-damaged Maxwell Game Preserve bridge

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — Replacement of a bridge located west of the Maxwell Game Preserve, which was washed out during severe flooding last year, is finally slated to begin next week. Public Works Director David Bohnenblust noted that the project took over a year to commence because existing concrete bridge models could not be substituted for the site, requiring a completely new design, though the construction phase itself is expected to take only about a week.

Moccasin Road reopens after concrete and power delays

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — Moccasin Road is set to reopen today after facing unexpected construction delays stemming from a mix-up with concrete materials and a localized power outage. According to Public Works Director David Bohnenblust, the county's concrete sections were mistakenly shipped to Oklahoma, where they were reportedly damaged, and a subsequent power outage at the local asphalt plant further delayed the road's final resurfacing.

County crews push to finish summer asphalt overlay and milling projects

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — The McPherson County Public Works Department is nearing the end of its summer road resurfacing schedule, with crews completing the final mile of an asphalt overlay on County Road 319 before moving to County Road 448 north of Galva this week. Following the overlay work, the county will begin its final milling project of the season on Fifth Avenue during the first week of August.

County takes lead on inundation maps and regional water issues

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — McPherson County recently mailed 70 notification letters regarding new inundation maps, prompting praise from Chief Engineer Earl Lewis of the Kansas Department of Agriculture's Division of Water Resources for being the first county in Kansas to take the lead on the issue. County officials also announced plans to meet with Sedgwick County commissioners to discuss ongoing regional water concerns surrounding Groundwater Management District 2.
