SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of South Hutchinson has appointed Capt. Lance Hirt as its new chief of police following the retirement of Chief Darrin Pickering, who stepped down April 13 after seven years of service to the community.
The South Hutchinson City Council selected Hirt, a 25-year law enforcement veteran, to lead the department. Hirt brings extensive experience in specialized operations to the role, having served in SWAT operations, firearms instruction, less-lethal force instruction and force-on-force training throughout his career.

City officials expressed confidence in Hirt's ability to lead the department, citing his depth of expertise and commitment to excellence as key factors in his selection. The city said his professionalism, integrity and approach to policing are expected to benefit South Hutchinson residents.
Pickering, who joined the South Hutchinson Police Department in 2019, oversaw the agency through seven years of service before retiring last week. City officials thanked Pickering for his dedication and contributions to public safety during his tenure.
