SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. - The Shawnee County Board of County Commissioners has approved a resolution drastically increasing the filing fee for data centers, energy storage facilities and solar farms to $15,000, up from the standard $700. The substantial fee increase reflects the unprecedented intensity, scale and complexity of these applications, which have drawn significant public interest and concern over their potential impact on local infrastructure.

SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. - Compass Data Centers is expected to file an application with Shawnee County as early as July 24, following a recent pre-application meeting with planning staff. If the developer meets the deadline and provides the substantial information requested by the county, the planning commission could hold a public hearing on the controversial project in October.
Residents urge moratorium on data center developments
SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. - Several south Topeka residents addressed the planning commission to plead for a moratorium on data center and battery storage facilities due to mounting concerns over noise pollution, water consumption and property values. Although the comments occurred during the non-agenda public comment period, they highlighted intense community opposition surrounding a proposed Compass Data Centers facility near the Walmart distribution center and urged the commission to implement a pause on such projects, saying they feared industrial encroachment into their neighborhoods.
Commission approves Kaw Valley Electric expansion with lighting condition
SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. - The Shawnee County Planning Commission voted 5-1 to approve a conditional use permit expansion for Kaw Valley Electric Cooperative, allowing the construction of a 30,000-square-foot warehouse, a 10,000-square-foot office and a gravel storage yard at 1100 SW Auburn Road. Following a neighboring resident's concerns over existing light pollution, commissioners added a condition requiring the facility to use low-impact lighting. One commissioner cast the lone dissenting vote.
