Commissioners approve $4.4 million amendment for Gage Park Carousel renovation
SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. — The Shawnee County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a $4.4 million guaranteed maximum price amendment Thursday for the final phase of the Gage Park Carousel renovation. Funded entirely by the Gage Park sales tax, the overall $6.9 million project will feature a climate-controlled building for the historic carousel, a second mini-train depot, year-round restrooms and party rooms. Parks and Recreation Director Tim Laurent noted that two-thirds of the budget covers standard construction, while the remaining third addresses specialized tasks such as restoring the carousel animals and relocating the train tracks.
Commissioners question future of Big Gage Shelter House amid zoo consolidation
SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. — During discussions on the Gage Park Carousel project, commissioners raised concerns about the potential transfer of the Big Gage Shelter House to the Topeka Zoo. Commissioner Kevin Cook noted that original consolidation paperwork does not mandate transferring the shelter house, emphasizing its importance as an essential, large-capacity venue for county employee gatherings and summer camps. The commission expressed interest in developing a cooperative agreement with the zoo to ensure the county retains usage rights for the historic facility.
County sets 2027 budget hearings amidst proposed $14 million increase
SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. — Shawnee County department heads will present their 2027 budget requests to the commission on July 13 and July 16, with initial proposals reflecting a nearly $14 million increase over the current year. Commissioner Kevin Cook noted that the requested departmental budgets total more than $165.7 million, up from the current $151.6 million operating budget. Cook urged taxpayers to attend the hearings, pointing out that while some departments are requesting flat budgets, others are asking for funding increases as high as 57 percent.
County officials address lack of data center moratorium following residents' concerns
SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. — Following extensive public comment from residents expressing concerns about potential data center developments near local schools, county officials addressed the lack of a moratorium. Land Use and Development Director Joni Thadani explained that a moratorium is unnecessary because the county recently implemented a conditional use permit process for such facilities. This process will require thorough public hearings and allow the county to evaluate and regulate technical aspects like noise, water usage and setbacks on a case-by-case basis if an application is submitted before upcoming summer deadlines.
Soldier Township to build new 24-hour fire station on NW Topeka Boulevard
SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. — The commission unanimously approved a conditional use permit for a new Soldier Township fire station to be located on Northwest Topeka Boulevard. The public use facility will operate 24 hours a day and be staffed by six personnel per shift. The site will house multiple emergency response vehicles featuring pass-through bays for easier highway access and will offer public access opportunities, including tours and community education programs.
County approves care coordination agreement for Adult Detention Center
SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. — Commissioners approved a contract with Astra Mental Health and Recovery Inc. to provide care coordination services within the Shawnee County Adult Detention Center at no cost to taxpayers. Corrections Deputy Director Tim Phelps said the agreement updates a longstanding partnership following the recent merger of Valeo Behavioral Health Care and Family Service and Guidance Center to form Astra. The contract allows the county and Astra to share information in compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act regulations to better assist inmates who are also clients of the mental health provider.
Election office reminds residents of upcoming voter registration, early voting deadlines
SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. — The Shawnee County elections office announced that the deadline for voter registration is Tuesday, July 14. The deadline is particularly important for residents who have recently moved or changed their names since the last election. Advance voting may begin in mid-July, with exact in-person times and locations set by the county elections office.
