Commissioners approve new zoning regulations for data centers amid heavy public opposition
SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. — The Shawnee County Board of County Commissioners approved a home rule resolution requiring conditional use permits for future energy storage systems and data centers in agricultural and industrial zones. Previously, these utility structures were permitted by right in heavy industrial zones without county oversight. The vote followed nearly two hours of public comment from dozens of residents who demanded a complete ban or a multiyear moratorium on data centers, citing concerns over massive water and electricity consumption, noise pollution and environmental impacts. County officials stressed that the resolution does not approve a specific data center, but rather establishes a necessary regulatory framework to scrutinize and place constraints on any future applications.
Auburn Road reconstruction project completed under budget
SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. — A major infrastructure project near Washburn Rural North Middle School at Southwest 29th Street and Southwest Auburn Road has concluded. The Shawnee County Commission acknowledged a final change order for the project's contractor, marking the end of the Southwest Auburn Road Reconstruction Project. Shawnee County Public Works Director Curt Niehaus noted the project required an aggressive timeline to accommodate the school's construction but was completed roughly four weeks ago. Officials praised the department's work, noting the multiagency collaboration between the city of Topeka, Auburn-Washburn Unified School District 437, the Kansas Department of Transportation and Shawnee County reportedly resulted in finishing the project ahead of schedule and below initial budget estimates.
