Shaw scores 32 but Hutchinson falls to Colby

COLBY, Kan. – Colby shot 53.6% and knocked down 10 3-pointers Saturday, Jan. 3, to defeat Hutchinson Community College 89-79 at the Colby Event Center, snapping the Blue Dragons' nine-game winning streak in the series.

The Trojans hit 30 of 56 overall shots, including 10 of 19 from 3-point range, as they handed Hutchinson (9-6, 4-5 KJCCC) its first loss to an opponent shooting 50% or higher this season.

Giannis Asimakopulos led Colby with 21 points, hitting 4 of 5 from beyond the arc. Aliou Diallo added 17 points, Nana Keutcha scored 13 and D.J. Cason had 12.

Sophomore Kyrell Shaw posted his second 30-point game of the season with a game-high 32 points for Hutchinson. Shaw shot 9 of 18 from the field with three 3-pointers and 11 of 13 from the free-throw line while adding five rebounds.

Sophomore Daleron Thomas tied his season high with 20 points in his first Blue Dragon start, hitting 6 of 11 from the floor and 7 of 10 from the foul line. Sophomore Bobby Cannon contributed 10 points.

Colby built a 15-point first-half lead behind six 3-pointers and took a 44-35 advantage into halftime after shooting 51.7%.

The Blue Dragons trailed 80-61 with 4:32 remaining before mounting a furious comeback. Thomas scored in the paint and hit a jumper after a Trojan turnover with 44 seconds left to cut Colby's lead to 84-79, but the Trojans hit 4 of 5 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Hutchinson shot 46.9% (23 of 49), including 6 of 21 from 3-point range and 27 of 38 from the free-throw line. The Blue Dragons were outrebounded 33-26 and committed 13 turnovers.

Colby finished 19 of 24 from the foul line and dished out a season-high 19 assists against the Blue Dragons.

Hutchinson will host No. 18 Coffeyville at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, at the Sports Arena.
