Shaw scores 32 as Hutchinson tops No. 18 Coffeyville 93-77

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kyrell Shaw scored 32 points Wednesday night, Jan. 7, to lead Hutchinson Community College to an 93-77 victory over No. 18 Coffeyville at the Sports Arena, marking the Blue Dragons' third win over a nationally ranked opponent this season.
Shaw, a sophomore, had 18 points in the first half and finished 8 of 17 from the field, including 2 of 6 from 3-point range and a perfect 12 of 12 from the free-throw line. It was his second consecutive 30-point performance and third of the season, making him the first Hutchinson player with back-to-back 30-point games since Matt Mayers in 2020-21.
The Blue Dragons (10-6, 5-5 Jayhawk Conference) never trailed after scoring the first five points of the game. Hutchinson built its largest lead at 36-21 with 7:49 remaining in the first half before Coffeyville closed to within 48-42 at halftime.
The Red Ravens (11-4, 5-4) cut the deficit to five points early in the second half, but Hutchinson responded with a decisive 20-4 run over 7½ minutes to take a 73-52 lead with 8:32 remaining.
Sophomores Bobby Cannon and Daleron Thomas each added 15 points for Hutchinson. Cannon hit three 3-pointers, while Thomas was 6 of 9 from the field with two 3-pointers.
The Blue Dragons shot 50.8% from the field (31 of 61), including 9 of 21 from 3-point range and 22 of 27 from the free-throw line. Hutchinson held a 40-34 rebounding advantage, led by Anthony Alston's career-high 11 boards. Lolo Rudolph distributed eight assists as the Dragons finished with 23 assists on 31 field goals.
Jack Sorrell led Coffeyville with 19 points. Ulysses Webb scored 12 and Ka'Bari Lewis added 11. The Red Ravens shot 39.4% (26 of 66) overall and 11 of 34 from 3-point range.
Hutchinson is now 3-1 against ranked opponents this season, with victories over No. 18 Coffeyville, No. 21 Dodge City and No. 15 Barton. The Blue Dragons have a bye Saturday and return to action Jan. 14 at Pratt.
