The Hutchinson High School Salthawks girls basketball team hosted the Valley Center High School Hornets at the Salthawk Activity Center on Tuesday, Feb. 10.
In their second matchup of the season, the Valley Center Hornet girls took an early lead against the Hutchinson squad. Valley Center was effective early, moving the ball into the lane against the Salthawks. However, the Salthawks responded with tight defense, and in the second quarter Hutchinson began to have more success attacking the basket. Valley Center held on to its lead until just after the three-minute mark of the second quarter, when the Salthawks tied the game at 15-15. The two teams traded scores for the rest of the period, with the half ending with the Hornets holding a 20-19 lead.
Hutchinson came out strong in the third quarter, scoring 20 points to the Hornets' 12, giving the Salthawks control of the game. Freshman Danai Morgan led the Salthawk scorers with 22 points in the match. Junior Tenley Keeton and senior Ava Krone contributed eight points each.
In the fourth quarter, the Salthawks continued to extend their lead, reaching 13 points early in the period. Hutchinson cruised into the final buzzer, winning the contest 51-40.
The scoring leaders for the Hornets were senior Avery Davison and sophomore Rachel Garten with 11 each.
With this win, the Salthawks' record now stands at 9-8. Hutchinson will next play a home game against Derby on Friday at the Salthawk Activity Center.
