The DEA confirmed that the event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In an announcement published Oct. 19, the sheriff's office said deputies will staff three Salina drop-off locations: the Dillons pharmacy patio at 1235 E. Cloud St., the south front entrance of Walmart at 2900 S. Ninth St. and the circle drive at Salina Regional Health Center, 400 S. Santa Fe Ave.
The collection is intended to prevent misuse and accidental poisonings by removing unused or expired medications from homes. The DEA said Take Back Day has collected more than 20 million pounds of medication nationwide since 2010. In October 2023, the sheriff's office reported collecting 189.6 pounds locally, bringing Saline County's cumulative total at that time to more than 13,000 pounds over about 12 years. The 2023 result is the latest local collection total found in publicly available reports.
They will accept tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid prescription drugs. Syringes, sharps, and illicit drugs will not be accepted. Liquid medications, such as cough syrup, must remain sealed in their original containers with caps tightly closed.
