Salina student Colin Burke represented Kansas at the National Civics Bee Championship on Oct. 14 in Washington, D.C., according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s finalist list.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation said 52 finalists representing all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and American Samoa competed in a team presentation, a multiple-choice round, a head-to-head gauntlet, an interview round and a final buzzer round. Peter Daniell of Colorado won the championship and a $100,000 contribution to a 529 education savings plan. Araoluwakiitan Afolabi of Florida placed second and received $25,000, while Carolyn Taylor of Michigan placed third and received $15,000.

Burke entered the middle-school competition while attending Salina South Middle School. According to the Kansas Leadership Center, he advanced after winning the Kansas State Finals on June 27 and receiving $1,000 for his proposal to provide free hygiene products in schools and city buildings for students in need.

Burke told KMUW that the effort could help create “a school where every student feels confident and that their basic needs are met.” He said teens would be more successful in and out of the classroom if schools treated them with dignity and met their basic needs.

After the state competition, the Kansas Leadership Center reported that Burke planned to implement the project at his new high school.
