Salina South rallies past Hutchinson in second half, 53-48

Hutchinson High School Salthawks boys basketball hosted the Salina South High School Cougars at the Salthawk Activity Center on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2026.
The Salina South Cougars entered the game with a record of 7-2, while the Hutchinson Salthawks had a record of 2-7.
In the first quarter, the Salthawks challenged the Cougars, taking an early lead of 15-7 by the end of the quarter. Hutchinson led by as much as nine points in the period and ended the half with a seven-point lead, 25-18.
However, Salina South came out strong in the second half. By the end of the third quarter, the Cougars had doubled their score from the first half and had taken a 36-30 lead.
The Salthawks put up a valiant effort in the fourth quarter, getting within four points of the Cougars at the midpoint of the quarter. Salina South continued with strong play from both the 3-point line and under the basket to finish out the game for a 53-48 victory.
With this loss, the Salthawks' record now stands at 2-8. Hutchinson's next game will be an away game versus Valley Center on Tuesday, Jan. 12. Hutchinson will next play several games away, with their next home match scheduled for Feb. 10, 2026, hosting the Valley Center Hornets at the Salthawk Activity Center.
