Board approves exterior updates for Garage Automotive Museum
SALINA, Kan. — The Salina Downtown Design Review Board unanimously approved exterior material and color revisions for The Garage Automotive Museum at 134 S. Fourth St. during its Tuesday meeting. The changes to the former 1931 gasoline service station include replacing originally planned gray simulated garage doors with white metal-clad Pella window units featuring red accents. Additionally, the board approved changing the storefront finish from clear anodized aluminum to dark bronze to better match the existing museum building.
Historic station passes state inspection, secures funding
SALINA, Kan. — The Garage Automotive Museum recently passed an on-site inspection by the Kansas State Historic Preservation Office with "flying colors," according to Executive Director Michelle Peck. Peck stated that the successful inspection supports ongoing efforts to secure state funding in downtown Salina, which is allocated for the rehabilitation of the historic 1931 service station that connects to the existing automotive museum.
Window donation prompts museum design pivot
SALINA, Kan. — A material donation led to significant design changes for The Garage Automotive Museum's historic service station renovation, shifting the building toward a more vibrant 1950s aesthetic. Principal Architect Charles Renz of JGR Architects told the board that after receiving a donation of Pella windows, the design team pivoted from the originally planned gray mock-garage doors to white window units. Renz said the design team wanted to avoid making the donated windows look like they were awkwardly stuck into standard garage doors, resulting in a cohesive white-and-red redesign.
'Fourth and Iron' historic signage planned for museum corner
SALINA, Kan. — The Garage Automotive Museum plans to add historically accurate painted signage to its newly renovated 1931 service station, commemorating its mid-century nickname. Executive Director Michelle Peck informed the board that the organization will soon submit permits to paint the intersection address on the building, restoring its historical identity from the 1950s when locals referred to the station simply as "Fourth and Iron."
Board recommends approval for Blue Skye Brewery sidewalk cafe
SALINA, Kan. — The Salina Downtown Design Review Board unanimously recommended Salina City Commission approval for a corrected sidewalk cafe license agreement for Blue Skye Brewery at 116 N. Santa Fe Ave. The newly proposed agreement updates the dimensions of the existing outdoor dining area to 6 feet deep by slightly more than 22 feet long, for a total of 134.8 square feet. City staff noted the area retains a 10-foot unobstructed walkway for pedestrians and remains well below the 200-square-foot maximum allowed for downtown sidewalk dining.
Permanent canopy approved for Blue Skye Brewery patio
SALINA, Kan. — Patrons at Blue Skye Brewery will soon have permanent shade over the outdoor dining area following the Salina Downtown Design Review Board's unanimous approval of a new canopy structure. The fully engineered canopy will be attached to the existing storefront header and supported by six load-bearing steel columns anchored to concrete footings in the public right-of-way. This replaces an earlier, unbuilt 2018 design concept that would have relied entirely on the historic building's facade for structural support. The project still requires a separate license agreement from the Salina City Commission because the canopy's steel columns and concrete footings represent permanent private improvements within the public right-of-way.
