Rono breaks school record, finishes second at FHSU Tiger Open

HAYS, Kan. – Hutchinson Community College freshman Mildred Rono broke her own school record Saturday, Oct. 11, running a 5K time of 16:41.09 to finish second at the FHSU Tiger Open at the Fort Hays State Cross Country Course.
Rono shaved more than eight seconds off her previous Blue Dragon record of 16:49.23, set Sept. 20 at the Missouri Southern Stampede.
The freshman missed her third race victory of the season by 1.16 seconds, finishing behind Iowa Western's Juliana Saket.
The 11th-ranked Blue Dragons did not post a team score with only four runners competing.
Hutchinson had two top-five finishes at the meet. Freshman Ashara Frater placed fifth with a time of 17:55.43, the fifth-fastest 5K time in Blue Dragon history.
Freshmen Evan Ramey finished 50th in 19:42.12, while freshman Kimberlin Lovell placed 55th in 19:59.06. Both runners posted season-best times in the 8K race.
Colorado School of Mines won the team title with 43 points, followed by Adams State with 58 points.
Hutchinson will compete in the Region 6 Championship on Oct. 24 in Colby.
