Reno County Promotes Emergency Preparedness During National Awareness Month

HUTCHINSON — Reno County officials are encouraging residents to prioritize emergency preparedness as September marks National Preparedness Month.

County authorities outlined five key reasons why maintaining a first aid kit and basic training are essential for community safety.

Emergency situations develop rapidly, and having supplies readily available allows residents to take immediate action before professional help arrives, officials said. Quick response can also prevent minor injuries from becoming more serious due to delayed care.

"A first aid kit allows you to stabilize someone until paramedics get there," county officials noted.

Basic emergency skills such as CPR, choking response and epinephrine injector use can prove lifesaving during critical moments, authorities said.

County officials emphasized that widespread preparedness reduces panic and benefits entire neighborhoods when residents have first aid knowledge and supplies.

During natural disasters, storms and power outages that can overwhelm hospitals and delay emergency response, personal preparedness becomes crucial for self-reliance until normal services resume.

"Storms, wildfires, and power outages can overwhelm hospitals and slow emergency response," county officials said. "A kit and training help you be self-reliant until normal services are restored."

The county's preparedness campaign coincides with the national observance designed to encourage Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses and communities.
