The production, which debuted in 2000, is a Kansas adaptation of Tchaikovsky's traditional Nutcracker ballet. Set in 1869 Kansas, the show reimagines the classic holiday story as an American celebration of the heartland's holiday season.

The musical score features Tchaikovsky's original composition adapted by Rick Kuethe, a Boston composer and Omaha, Nebraska, native.

The Prairie Nutcracker is staged every other year.
