Hutchinson Community Foundation Distributes Care Packages on National Nonprofit Day

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community Foundation celebrated National Nonprofit Day on Saturday by distributing care packages with a Kansas State Fair theme to local nonprofit organizations, recognizing the vital work these groups perform throughout Reno County.
Board members and committee volunteers fanned out across the community on Aug. 17 to deliver the specially themed packages as a gesture of appreciation for the daily impact nonprofit organizations have on the area.
"Nonprofits touch all of our lives every day in ways we often do not realize," the foundation said in a social media post. "We hope you'll join us in saying thank you to all of the organizations that make our community strong."
The care package distribution coincided with National Nonprofit Day, which is observed annually on Aug. 17 to recognize the goals and positive impacts nonprofits have on communities worldwide. The day was established in 2017 to formally acknowledge the contributions of nonprofit organizations and the role they play in society.
The Hutchinson Community Foundation, established in 1989, describes itself as "the heart of philanthropic giving in Reno County." Located at 1 N Main St in Hutchinson, the organization works to connect donors with community needs and has earned a 96% recommendation rating based on 13 reviews.
According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, there are 1.5 million registered nonprofit organizations in the United States. These organizations employ over 10% of America's workforce and play vital roles in community development by offering services such as food banks, affordable housing, medical care, legal counsel and education.
The date of National Nonprofit Day holds historical significance for the charitable sector. The Tariff Act of 1894, signed into law on Aug. 17, imposed the first federal income tax on corporations, including exemptions for nonprofit corporations and charitable institutions.
The foundation's initiative reflects a broader trend of nonprofits supporting one another. National Nonprofit Day provides organizations an opportunity to showcase their impact, thank supporters and encourage continued community engagement.
