Hutchinson Animal Shelter Offers Comprehensive Programs, Services to Address Pet Overpopulation

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Animal Shelter provides multiple programs and services aimed at reducing pet overpopulation and connecting animals with permanent homes throughout Reno County.
Built in 2007 for the City of Hutchinson, the shelter's goal is to help cut down on pet overpopulation in Reno County and place animals in forever homes, according to information on the facility's adoption platforms.
The Hutchinson Animal Shelter operates as a full-service, open-intake animal shelter and animal control department serving the city limits of Hutchinson.
Adoption Services and Fees
The shelter requires potential adopters to call and schedule an appointment to meet with animals, where they work with an adoption counselor to find the right pet. Most adoptions are completed the same day, though occasionally landlord or veterinary references cannot be reached immediately.
The adoption fee includes spay surgery, all vaccinations, microchip with national registration, heartworm testing for dogs and feline leukemia and FIV testing for cats. The shelter offers low adoption fees that cover essential services such as spaying/neutering and vaccinations, though specific fee amounts require contacting the shelter directly.
Specialized Programs
Barn Cat Program
The Hutchinson Animal Shelter regularly takes in under-socialized outdoor or feral cats that are not suitable as household companions, yet make excellent working cats. The Barn Cat Program is designed to find homes at barns, warehouses, farms and other safe locations for cats that have traditionally been deemed unadoptable.
A working cat will keep property rodent-free for the price of daily cat food, according to shelter information.
STOP Spay/Neuter Program
The STOP Program prevents pet overpopulation by providing low-cost, quality spay/neuter services to Hutchinson and South Hutchinson pet owners in need of assistance. The program is solely funded by memberships, donations, grants and co-pays.
The Hutchinson Animal Shelter takes in approximately 2,000 stray and owner-surrendered animals each year, highlighting the need for spay and neuter services to address overpopulation.
Hope for Hutchinson Foster Program
Hope for Hutchinson is a pet foster program for pet owners in rehabilitative programs who are temporarily unable to care for their fur babies.
