HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 15th-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team scored three first-half goals to defeat Western Wyoming 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Don Michael Field.
Isabell Van Fleet, Poppy Smith and Maria Azevedo all found the net in the opening half as the Blue Dragons are now 2-0 for the second consecutive season. The victory extended Hutchinson's current home wins streak to 12 games, with three of those games ending in ties.
Van Fleet opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with her first career goal, heading in a corner kick cross from freshman midfielder Olivia Tamaki. The goal came after a free kick from Anastasia Pokrandt nearly sailed over the Western Wyoming goalkeeper, resulting in the corner kick opportunity.
Smith extended the lead just over four minutes later, converting after freshman Onna Dowling intercepted a clearing attempt and immediately fed Smith the ball. Smith worked through traffic and fired a 20-yard shot into the lower left corner for her third goal of the season.
Azevedo capped the first-half scoring with 3:51 remaining, finishing a cross from Isabell Puchinelli into an open net to give the Blue Dragons a commanding 3-0 advantage.
Freshman goalkeeper Evie Carvell protected the lead with a season-high five saves to earn her second shutout of the season. The Blue Dragons' defense limited Western Wyoming to just five shots on goal and 12 total shots.
Western Wyoming was awarded a penalty kick in the 68th minute, but Maddie Miller's attempt hit the crossbar, preserving the shutout.
Hutchinson next travels to face NOC-Enid at 5 p.m. Sunday in Enid, Oklahoma. Western Wyoming falls to 0-2-1 on the season.
