New playground opens at Hays' Massey Park after equipment replacement

HAYS, Kan. — The City of Hays has completed installation of new playground equipment at Massey Park, replacing structures that had served the community for over two decades. The upgraded playscape at 17th and Allen features two large slides, an enclosed rope climb tunnel, and agility components designed for active play, plus a separate area for younger children. Parks Director Jeff Boyle said the project reflects the city's commitment to maintaining its four master plan parks — Massey, Seven Hills, Aubel-Bickle, and Sunrise — which serve specific quadrants of the community. The previous equipment, installed in 2002, had deteriorated beyond repair with replacement parts no longer available, prompting the safety-focused upgrade. Kansas City-based Aspire 2 Play completed the project within the city's budgeted funds, and Boyle said families have already begun using the new facilities extensively. The improvement aligns with the Parks Department's year-round maintenance strategy to ensure Hays' primary recreational spaces remain safe destinations for neighborhood families.
