Moran pushes for university research investments, Haskell governance reforms

WASHINGTON DC — U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., is renewing his push to secure sustained federal investments in higher education while seeking to overhaul governance at Haskell Indian Nations University.

Moran met April 28 with University of Kansas Chancellor Doug Girod and other higher education officials at the American Association of Universities to emphasize the critical role of federal funding in driving university research. The discussion focused on expanding student opportunities and advancing key scientific initiatives, including space exploration, cancer treatment and the strengthening of civil discourse.

Addressing long-term institutional stability, Moran also met with members of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce to detail his legislative efforts to transition Haskell's governance away from the federal Bureau of Indian Education and to an independent, tribally appointed Board of Regents. During the meeting with local advocates, Moran provided an update on his recent talks with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. The senator said he pressed Burgum for stronger federal support and raised concerns over ongoing delays in appointing permanent leadership at Haskell, arguing that structural reforms and stable management are essential for the institution to successfully serve students across Indian Country.
