MHS Boys Soccer Opens Season with Shutout Sweep of Great Bend

McPherson High School boys soccer kicked off the season in dominant fashion, with both the Varsity and JV squads posting shutout wins over Great Bend.

In the Varsity match, Parker Riemann broke the deadlock right before halftime, finishing off a loose ball in the box to give McPherson momentum heading into the second half. Yahir Valadez extended the lead early in the second half with a goal against the run of play, and Leo Gaspar Mendez capped the scoring late, finishing a pass from Jackson Martin for the 3-0 final. McPherson finished with 4 shots on goal, and goalkeeper Hunter Schroeder turned in a standout performance with 9 saves, including a diving penalty-kick stop in the final five minutes to preserve the shutout.

Head coach Chris Adrian praised the team's resilience, noting that early-season fatigue and cramping tested the squad but that players answered the challenge when it mattered most. He credited the win to a full team effort and pointed to the electric atmosphere and fan support as a highlight of the season opener.

The JV squad made an even bigger statement, cruising to an 8-0 win. Aiden Pattison led the way with 2 goals, while Trey Fiedler, Miguel Alonzo, and Leo Gaspar Mendez each contributed a goal and multiple assists. Paxton Weiser, Malachi Griggs, and Quade Broadus rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece.

The pair of shutout victories mark a strong start for the program as it looks to build momentum into the rest of the season.
