McPherson Middle School Tennis Captures Patriot League Championship
Bullpups dominate tournament with six division titles at Winfield
The McPherson Middle School girls tennis team capped off their season in commanding fashion Tuesday, claiming the Patriot League championship at Winfield despite a weather-delayed start. The Bullpups dominated the tournament field, capturing first place in six of eight divisions, including a perfect sweep of all four singles divisions and three of four doubles championships, to outdistance second-place Winfield and third-place Arkansas City.
McPherson's depth proved overwhelming as Gwen Prieb battled through a tough championship match at #1 singles to win 6-3, while Hattie Krug dominated at #2 singles with consecutive 6-0 victories. Anna Kahle maintained her positive approach through windy conditions to secure the #3 singles title 6-4, and Aly Rausch completed the singles sweep with strategic shot placement at #4. The doubles teams continued the Bullpups' dominance, with Charley Duerksen and Addie Schneider controlling the net for the #1 doubles title, while Audrey Pflughoeft/Sloan Shober and Amanda Lauw/Lauren Southern added championships at #3 and #4 doubles respectively. Only Brielle Rothrock and Farah Britting fell short of a title, pushing Arkansas City to a tiebreak before finishing second at #2 doubles. "As a coach, it is fantastic to see our depth on display, as every player was competing for the championship in their division," said head coach Henry Weiner. "It is an honor to coach these players, because they are great tennis players and excellent people too."
