County misses threshold for June storm relief funds

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — McPherson County will not receive state or federal disaster funding following a June 1 storm, despite Lindsborg sustaining about $70,000 in damage. Assistant Director of Emergency Management and Communications Tim Hawkinson reported that the county did not meet the $146,000 countywide threshold to qualify for assistance. Outside of Lindsborg, Hawkinson noted the county only experienced about $2,000 in damages, primarily related to generator fuel and office cleanup.

Local inmate population holds steady

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — The McPherson County Jail is currently housing 44 inmates, including 40 men, three women and one juvenile. During a weekly update, Sheriff Jerry Montagne noted 17 arrests for the week, with 38 inmates currently held for McPherson County District Court and five for municipal court. The department also reported a successful turnout and deployment of deputies to assist with the recent Inman parade.

Commissioners to meet with Sedgwick County on water levels

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — McPherson County officials will attend a July 14 work session with Sedgwick County commissioners in Wichita to discuss regional water issues. The upcoming meeting follows recent discussions at a Groundwater Management District 2 meeting regarding local water level reporting and regional resource management.

Delayed bridge repair near Maxwell Game Preserve set to begin

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — A bridge west of the Maxwell Game Preserve that washed out during floods last year is finally scheduled for installation in approximately two weeks. Public Works Director David Bohnenblust noted that designing and manufacturing the concrete box took nearly a year. The finished product is now waiting in the county yard and is the third item on the bridge crew's priority list, following the fuel island project and a separate washout on Moccasin Road.

Asphalt work to cause lane closures near Williams fractionator plant

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — Motorists can expect one-lane traffic on Fifth Avenue near the Williams Mid-Continent Fractionation & Storage facility west of Conway as the county coordinates with the K&O Railroad to smooth a rough railroad crossing. County crews will spend two days replacing removed railroad ties with asphalt, temporarily diverting resources from their ongoing paving project on 18th Avenue.

Public works to issue reminders on illegal campaign signs

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — With election season approaching, the McPherson County Public Works Department reported a recent influx of campaign signs being placed illegally in county and township rights of way. Public Works Director David Bohnenblust announced that the department will send emails to local candidates reminding them that political signage is strictly prohibited in these public areas.
