McPherson Continues Streak of Statewide Performing Arts Recognition
MHS named a Commended School as Olathe Northwest claims 2026-27 KSHSAA Performing Arts School of Excellence Award
McPherson High School has once again been recognized among Kansas' top performing arts programs, earning Commended School status in the Kansas State High School Activities Association's (KSHSAA) 2026-27 Performing Arts School of Excellence Award. The honor keeps MHS's streak alive — the school has been named a finalist or commended school every year since the award began, with a first-place win during the 2022-23 school year.
This year's top honor went to Olathe Northwest High School, which was recognized for the first time after earning commendations in 2022 and 2025. The Olathe Northwest program capped a strong year with a fourth-place finish at the Class 6A State 2-Speaker Debate Tournament, a state speech championship in Dramatic Interpretation, and multiple superior ratings across music and theatre competitions.
In total, 23 Kansas high schools were recognized for the 2025-26 school year, including four finalists and 18 commended schools. A selection committee made up of leaders from the Kansas Music Educators Association, Kansas Speech Communication Association, and Kansas Thespians worked alongside KSHSAA staff to evaluate programs statewide before choosing this year's honorees.
McPherson's continued presence on that list reflects the sustained strength of its Speech, Debate, Band, Vocal Music, Orchestra, and Theatre Arts programs — a tradition of excellence that shows no signs of slowing down.
