McPherson property owners could face higher tax bills next year as city officials prepare to discuss the 2027 municipal budget. The McPherson City Commission has scheduled a special session for July 14, 2026, according to a city agenda posting, to consider a proposed resolution that would allow the city to exceed the revenue neutral rate.

Exceeding the revenue neutral rate means the city intends to collect more total property tax dollars in 2027 than it did in the previous year. Under Kansas law, local governments must formally notify taxpayers and pass a resolution if they plan to capture additional revenue resulting from rising property valuations, rather than lowering the mill levy to offset those increases.

While specific spending targets for the 2027 budget have not yet been finalized, the July 14 discussion will set preliminary groundwork for the city's financial plan and determine how much of the increased tax burden, if any, will be passed on to local property owners.
