Marshall touts rural tax relief, business capital during southwest Kansas tour
The senator kicked off National Small Business Week by highlighting legislation aimed at expanding rural investments and lowering health care costs
DODGE CITY, Kan. — U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., highlighted new pathways for rural business investment and tax relief during a southwest Kansas tour Monday to kick off National Small Business Week, celebrating a sector that contributes more than $25 billion annually to the state's economy through payrolls, according to Marshall's office.
Marshall detailed the financial impact of the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, which secured a permanent 20% small business deduction and full expensing provisions intended to help rural operators retain more of their earnings. He also promoted his bipartisan Investing in All of America Act, which he said passed both congressional chambers unanimously and awaits the president's signature. The legislation would exempt rural and manufacturing investments from Small Business Administration leverage caps to direct more private capital into underserved communities.
The tour underscored the daily challenges and resilience of rural entrepreneurs, notably in Jetmore, where the Shafer family continues to operate Hodgeman County Pharmacy — the county's only pharmacy — from a temporary hospital space after a fire destroyed their Main Street building earlier this year.
Marshall's itinerary spanned multiple communities, including stops at Midway Market and Hen's Hideaway in Kinsley, the Dighton Inn and L&R Supply in Lane County, NuLife Market's food-grade grain sorghum processing operations in Scott County and Dick Construction in Garden City. He concluded the trip in Dodge City at the Care to Thrive Clinic, which partners with local employers to provide affordable, same-day health care. Marshall used the visit to advocate for expanding health savings accounts and improving access to preventive medicine.
