Big Brothers Big Sisters of Manhattan plans residential-style rebuild on Pierre Street

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Following the approved demolition of its fire-damaged property at 519 Pierre St., Big Brothers Big Sisters of Manhattan intends to construct a new building on the site. A representative for the organization's rebuild committee informed the Historic Resources Board that a construction manager has been selected for the project and noted the organization plans to build a dual-purpose structure that will function as an office but will be designed so it can be easily sold as a private residence in the future.

Board discusses Sunset Cemetery National Register of Historic Places nomination

MANHATTAN, Kan. — The Historic Resources Board discussed advancing Sunset Cemetery for listing on the National Register of Historic Places to unlock access to preservation services and state grants. However, members noted a recent setback regarding funding for the cemetery's Memorial Gateway. The board learned that because the Memorial Gateway is not classified as a building, historic tax credits cannot be utilized to fund its much-needed repairs, although a formal historical listing would still yield other long-term benefits for the site.
