Commission tables water park design bid, sets special meeting

LIBERAL, Kan. — The Liberal City Commission delayed selecting a design and construction firm for the city's new outdoor water park after expressing confusion over competing fee structures. Proposals from LK Architecture and another firm were debated, and the matter was tabled to seek a clearer comparison of the proposals and related construction costs.

Commission approves $100,000 for dog park parking lot

LIBERAL, Kan. — An additional $100,000 was approved to construct a concrete parking lot for the city's new dog park. City Manager Scarlette Diseker noted the original dog park project budget did not include the cost of the parking lot. The concrete work is expected to be completed in-house by city staff, with funds sourced from the community development portion of the city's 1 percent sales tax. Officials said the lot will also provide overflow parking for the nearby splash park and recreation center.

Police remind bars of 2 a.m. closing requirement

LIBERAL, Kan. — The Liberal Police Department announced it will strictly enforce the standard 2 a.m. closing time for liquor sales after reports of local establishments staying open later than allowed. Police Chief Chester Pinkston said a recent change in state law, House Bill 2481, allows extended alcohol sales until 5 a.m. for the 2026 World Cup only if local municipalities formally opt in. Because the city did not do so, local businesses must adhere to their regular operating hours. Officers will distribute educational warning letters to businesses found in violation and noted that continued noncompliance could result in suspension of liquor licenses.

Police deem "Liberal's Night Out" event a success

LIBERAL, Kan. — Police Chief Chester Pinkston reported that this year's Liberal's Night Out was highly successful, drawing one of the largest crowds in recent memory. Organizers said the new layout and variety of food vendors were well received by the community. The police department and city staff were praised during the meeting for their efforts in hosting the community engagement event.

Fire department launches fireworks safety campaign

LIBERAL, Kan. — Ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, the Liberal Fire Department is launching an educational campaign to prevent fires caused by improperly discarded fireworks. Starting July 1, firefighters will patrol neighborhoods to distribute educational materials. Fire Chief Kelly Kirk said the department is providing free plastic buckets for residents to soak used fireworks overnight before disposal. The police department will provide aerial observation and backup enforcement for fire safety compliance during the holiday weekend.

City to establish first formal stormwater regulations

LIBERAL, Kan. — To close a long-standing gap in city ordinances, the commission approved moving forward with work on formal stormwater and subdivision regulations. City officials said the city currently lacks codified stormwater standards for some new housing developments, leading to inconsistent requirements for builders. The new regulations are intended to establish clearer rules for drainage and green space and to better define responsibility for future maintenance.

State of the city address scheduled for July 15

LIBERAL, Kan. — The annual State of the City address has been scheduled for noon on July 15 at the Randall Girl Scout Building. The event will feature a catered meal provided by the Baker Arts Center and requires an RSVP from attendees. City Manager Scarlette Diseker said community progress, infrastructure and upcoming municipal goals will be discussed at the event.
