TOPEKA, Kan. — Gov. Laura Kelly has officially proclaimed May as Parental Mental Health Awareness Month in Kansas, highlighting the critical role parental well-being plays in the health of families statewide.
The proclamation recognizes the prevalence of perinatal mental health conditions — including depression, anxiety and psychosis — which affect nearly 20 percent of mothers and at least 10 percent of fathers and partners each year. With more than 34,000 babies born in Kansas annually, state officials say the mental health of parents has significant implications for child development and family stability.
Despite their prevalence, these conditions often go unrecognized and untreated due to stigma, limited awareness and inadequate access to screening and services.
"Supporting parental mental health is essential to building strong families and healthy communities," said Amy Dean-Campmire, director of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Bureau of Family Health. "By raising awareness and reducing stigma, we can ensure Kansas parents have the support they need to thrive."
State health officials emphasize that parental mental health disorders can affect any family regardless of background, and may have lasting impacts on child development, including behavioral challenges and difficulties with attachment. However, they note these conditions are highly treatable through therapy, medication, peer support and community-based services.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is encouraging healthcare providers, community organizations and families to prioritize screening, early identification and connection to care throughout the month.
KDHE and partners across the state plan to promote education, resources and support systems during May to improve outcomes for parents and children alike.
