COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College's men's basketball team upset No. 23 Coffeyville 74-68 Saturday, Feb. 21, at Nellis Hall, winning its third consecutive road game against the Red Ravens and third upset of a ranked opponent on the road this season.

Hutchinson trailed 33-27 at halftime but outscored Coffeyville 47-35 in the second half to improve to 13-15 overall and 8-14 in the Jayhawk Conference. Coffeyville dropped to 18-9 overall and 12-9 in conference play.

Daleron Thomas led all scorers with 23 points — his seventh 20-point game of the season — and added five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Bobby Cannon scored 20 points, hitting three 3-pointers and pulling down six rebounds.

Every Blue Dragon who played in the game scored.

The turning point came in the second half when Hutchinson, trailing by as many as seven points, went on an 11-0 scoring run. Cannon hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 43-43 with 12:23 remaining. Hutchinson then went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in the final 42 seconds to build a 74-65 lead before a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Coffeyville's Jack Sorrell set the final score.

Hutchinson shot 48.3% from the floor and 27.8% from 3-point range. The Blue Dragons won the rebounding battle 36-31, committed only eight turnovers and outscored Coffeyville in points off turnovers 12-4 and bench points 18-13.

Sorrell led Coffeyville with 18 points. Rashid Kuta added 15 points and six rebounds, and Ulysses Webb contributed 10 points, four rebounds and two assists. The Red Ravens shot 40% from the floor and 38.5% from deep but were outpaced in the second half.

With the sweep of the season series, Hutchinson has now defeated Coffeyville in three straight meetings dating to last season. The Blue Dragons are 5-3 against nationally ranked opponents and 6-7 in road games this season.
