Hutchinson upset by Southwestern Christian in season-low offensive performance

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic, falling 71-68 to Southwestern Christian in opening-night upset at the Sports Arena on Friday, Nov. 7.
The Blue Dragons (3-1) posted a season-low 41.9 percent shooting performance as the Rams (3-0) earned their first victory ever against Hutchinson.
Tied at 31 at halftime, Southwestern Christian seized control with an 11-0 run midway through the second half, erasing a two-point Hutchinson lead to build a 44-35 advantage with 16:15 remaining. The Blue Dragons responded with an 8-0 run, pulling within 46-45 on an Asher Boney field goal with 14:04 left.
Hutchinson twice tied the game at 52 and 54 but never regained the lead. The Rams built a 69-61 cushion with 1:48 to play after a 9-3 run.
Kordell Williams scored with 3.7 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 71-68, giving Hutchinson possession, but the Blue Dragons couldn't get a game-tying shot attempt off before time expired.
Kyrell Shaw led Hutchinson with 17 points but struggled from the floor, hitting 4 of 13 shots. Boney added 11 points and seven rebounds. Daleron Thomas scored nine points, while Williams and Chudier Dorar contributed eight points each.
The Blue Dragons shot 23 of 55 from the floor, including 5 of 23 from 3-point range, and 17 of 21 from the free-throw line. Hutchinson out-rebounded Southwestern Christian 37-32 but committed 14 turnovers.
Donny Thomas paced the Rams with 14 points. Ahmere Ross added 11 points and Daryl Blanks finished with 10.
Southwestern Christian shot 22 of 57 overall (38.6 percent), including 8 of 24 from 3-point range and 19 of 27 from the foul line. The Rams committed nine turnovers.
Hutchinson fell to 8-1 all-time at the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic and 1-1 against Southwestern Christian.
