HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The city has completed the purchase of Sonoco Water Rights in a move officials say will secure the community's long-term water supply.
City officials said the acquisition of the fully perfected water rights strengthens Hutchinson's water portfolio and increases its ability to meet daily needs while supporting future development and industry.
"Water security matters, and this purchase helps ensure Hutchinson is prepared today and well into the future," officials said in a statement.
The investment protects the city against uncertainty and rising competition for water resources across Kansas, according to officials. They described the purchase as responsible, forward-thinking planning necessary to safeguard essential infrastructure.
Water rights are among the city's most critical assets, officials said, requiring careful long-term planning to ensure service remains safe, reliable and available.
Additional information about the purchase, including background and technical review, is available in the Dec. 16 City Council session video.
