HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Public Library will host its first annual Kansas creative writing contest with submissions due Jan. 15.

Winners will be announced during an open mic night Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m. in observance of Kansas Day.

The contest is open to participants 18 and older who may submit one entry in the following categories: poetry, short story, film script/screen play or personal essay/memoir.

All entries must be under 1,000 words and relate to Kansas, Reno County or Hutchinson.

The winner will receive a book-themed gift basket containing items from Kansas authors, local attractions and other prizes, according to the library's announcement.

Participants can submit entries through a Google form available on the library's Facebook page.

The library posted the announcement Jan. 2 on social media.

Kansas Day, celebrated annually Jan. 29, marks the anniversary of Kansas' admission to the Union in 1861.
